Engaging Your Mind and Faith

He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 11 Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you.

2 Samuel 10: 10-11, NIV

Christianity is a way of life that challenges us to walk in humility, nobility and courage borne out of faith. The life of a Christian should not be occupied with only religious sacraments and confessions. Our faith as Christians therefore does not commend us to put our mind in a state of inertia or mere confessions and hope without initiative, problem solving or hard-work.

In Sam 10: 10-11, Joab rallied his troop to be courageous and fight boldly before committing their efforts into the hands of God. This is how to engage your mind positively in the things of faith – faith is not a state of inertia or do-nothing.

Many have confused faith in the promises of God to being in a secluded state of inertia devoid of initiative, study or hardwork. They are just simply waiting for manner to fall from heaven.

To engage your mind while activating faith could not be more explicit in Deut. 2:31 : ” .. See I have begun to give Sihon and his land to you. Begin to possess it that you may inherit the land”. Here the children of Israel received a promise from God but they had to believe it, engage their mind and efforts to achieve this divine promise.
