The Normal Christian

“For we live by faith, not by sight.”(2Corinthians 5:7)

The normal Christian life is designed for supernatural living. The Christians of old lived supernaturally and to abide in the natural was not a normal experience for them. A glimpse into the book of the Acts of Apostles testifies to their phenomenal lives.

A normal Christian life ought to live and abide in the supernatural which is higher than his natural thoughts and inclinations.

The normal Christian knows that he is forgiven and that his sins have been washed away in the blood of Jesus and he henceforth knows that sin no longer has a hold on him.

He knows that he isn’t under the yoke of the law anymore but now under the grace made available to him by Jesus Christ. He understands that this is the foundation of the normal life and that anything but this is abnormal.

In fact, the normal Christian life is a supernatural life!

Paul gave us a view into what it means to live a supernatural life, which essentially is a life being lived in complete obedience to Jesus:

“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me, and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:19-20).

Unfortunately, many Christians never live up to this expectation because their spirit man has been blunted out by their natural inclination and appetite to the point that they consider supernatural living as fatal.

Not having a heart for childlike faith, they reckon that the simple work of salvation Jesus made for them on the cross is just too easy to believe therefore they must chase after something more complicated and tangible if they would be safe – this is a fatal problem to a Christian life.

Concerning this fatality the Bible clearly warns:

“ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries”. (Hebrews 10:26-27).

Beloved, indeed what is fatal for the Christian is to remain at the natural plane and never realize his supernatural calling in Christ.

What is fatal is to shun the challenges of faith living but to cling to the familiar and the “safe” appetite and inclinations. Even though Apostle Paul was in constant danger as he pursued the call of God upon his life God never left him but gave him a promise that would lead him to the high point of his ministry- to testify to the Lord’s saving grace in Rome. (Acts 23:11).

Even though Paul experienced a terrifying storm sailing to Rome, the supernatural word of the Lord was that he would testify in Rome and that word like a shield brought him safely ashore and onward to Rome.

Therefore, the greatest enemy of supernatural living is fear which is the opposite of faith. Many always want to play it safe and not to be termed a fanatical Christians.

The truth is that for the normal Christian, safety isn’t found in his routine living, in his bedroom where he feels secure from the calling of the supernatural living by faith, safety dwells in his complete turn around in obedience to Jesus by faith as he pursues the call of God upon his life, claiming God’s promises and subduing opposition to the truth of God. This was what the heroes of faith in the Bible achieved.

Supernatural living may appear risky but it’s never fatal. Moses only began to access and experience the supernatural life when “ He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward”. (Hebrews 11:26).

For a Christian to always evaluate his choices based on the natural will always lead to disappointments.

If Moses had chosen to prioritize the treasures of Egypt over the call of God upon his life he would have met with fatalities and great defeats. But he realized that the ways of the Lord dwell in the supernatural and not in the natural plane.

Moses realized at the point of decision that the supernatural life takes a supernatural view of things and that victorious living was at odds with the priorities of the carnal life.

Beloved what yardstick are you using to evaluate your life and choices? The spiritual or the carnal? Not even your emotions and past experience can serve as accurate pointers to divine choices. It will take the Holy Spirit’s leading.

The Bible says ….” the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you”. (Romans 8:7-9)
