Knowing the Will of God

“Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?

Romans 11:34– NIV

What is the will of God we may ask? The will of God could be defined as God’s plan and this plan could be for a person or for the world at large. It could also be defined as God’s purpose for each of us and for humanity at large.

A perfect model to understanding God’s purpose for man and for the world at large is found in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God purposed Jesus to die for the sins of the world and to offer salvation and eternal life to those who believe Him. His death also atoned for the sin of the world to bring depraved humanity to God.

How do we know the will of God for our lives? Again, we shall use Jesus as a model to proffer an answer to this question.

Even though God’s plan for his life was foretold through prophecy thousands of years before He was even born (Gen. 3:15) Jesus had to persevere in prayer ( Matthew 4:1-2) and in the word of God to know and learn about God’s will for His life.

Through the twin process of prayer and studying the word of God the blue print of His foretold purpose yielded dividend to Him and he was able to start His ministry saying “Behold, I have come – in the volume of the book it is written of Me – to do Your will, O God.” (Hebrews 10:7.)

What can we learn from this? We can say that beyond prophecies and visions it will take diligent effort in prayer and the word of God to discover the precise meaning of God’s will for us and to know how to pursue His purpose for our lives.

Suffice to say that prayer has a role in the fulfillment of God’s purpose. More than any other tool to be used in search of purpose prayer takes pre-eminence therefore we find the word of God saying “ whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved”. (Romans 10:13)

Knowing the will of God is more than visions and prophecy. Many could even see and predict future events but how many actually know and follow the mind of God and his will ? In Romans 11:34 we read: “For who can know the LORD’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice?

However, to know the purpose of God for our life and to engage in prayer for such purpose we must continually pursue intimacy with God who is the author of purpose. Apostle Paul speaking in the books of Romans 10:14 said “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?”

The more we consecrate our heart to God the more His will for our lives become clearer and nothing in the world gives the abundance of peace that a man could have once he discovers God’s purpose for his life.
